Your Voice is Needed to Protect Families in Need
Protect the dignity of life today! Call or email your member of Congress to protect access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for families in need.
Both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate have passed their Farm Bills, which means that there could be a vote on a final bill in the next few months. The Farm Bill is a comprehensive piece of legislation that's passed every 5 years. It includes funding for a number of programs-including SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Both the House and the Senate write and pass their own version of the Farm Bill. Now that they've both passed their versions, the bills will go to conference and they'll come up with a single bill. This final Farm Bill will then have to also pass both chambers again.
Are the 2 Farm Bills basically the same?
Not even close! The House Farm Bill included ineffective and punitive work requirements for SNAP recipients and increased administrative burdens on states. The Diocese OPPOSED the House Farm Bill.
The Senate Farm Bill was a bipartisan effort that protected SNAP and included more funding for states to try innovative solutions to help SNAP participants get and keep a job. The Diocese SUPPORTED the Senate Farm Bill.
How did Utah's delegation vote on them?
So what's next?
Conference! Members of the House and Senate will together and make a final Farm Bill. It will probably include elements of both Farm Bills.
What can I do?
Utah's delegation needs to hear your voice! Call your Senators and Representative and let them know that you want them to support a bipartisan farm bill that protects SNAP! Thank Senator Hatch for his votes, and let the rest know that you are disappointed that they didn't stand up for low-income Utahns!
